  • Standard & Poor's Economists Visit IIER

      On the afternoon of September 7, a delegation headed by Paul Gruenwald, Chief Asia-Pacific Economist at Standard & Poor's Rating Services, visited the Institute of International Economic Research (IIER) under AMR. IIER Director Ye Fujing met with the delegation. Also present at the meeting were Researcher Yao Shumei and Dr. Yuan Shenglong.   The two sides carried out extensive and in-depth communications on the economic situation of the United States and hot topics about China's economy, involving the monetary policies of the Federal Reserve, China's debt risks and control of irrational foreign investments, and total factor productivity changes of major economies during the post-crisis era, etc. During the talks, Ye introduced China's new achievements as a result of the adoption of the policies of reform and opening up, as well as the effects of the policies on maintaining steady growth, making structural adjustments, and guarding against risks, and gave a general introduction to the difficulties and challenges that China's economy faces. Also, he answered the questions raised by the delegation about whether China's economic growth target is excessively high, how to guard against credit risks, how to carry out internationalization of RMB and ensure balance of international payment, and how to judge "go global" and guard against capital flight, etc, and made clarifications to some erroneous judgments so as to assist the delegation in gaining a better understanding of China’s economic development. The two sides reached a preliminary consensus on further carrying out academic communications and cooperation.

  • Japanese Guests Visit AMR

      On August 25, a six-person delegation headed by Osamu Tanaka, Vice Director of the Policy Research Institute of Japan’s Ministry of Finance, visited AMR. AMR Vice President Bi Jiyao met and held talks with the delegation. Also present at the meeting were Deputy Director Liu Xu of the Department of Research Planning and Management, Director Du Feilun of the Institute of Economic Research, Deputy Director Li Shigang of the Institute of Economic Research, Director Zhang Zheren of the Institute of International Economic Research, and Dr. Wang Wan of the International Exchange Division of the Department of Research Planning and Management.   At the request of the guests, Bi gave a detailed introduction of China's situation and relevant policies. He emphasized that in this year China's major economic indicators are within an appropriate range, its structure constantly adjusts and upgrades, and the quality and returns of economic growth keep improving. Du and Li answered questions on consumption and finance in China's economy respectively that the Japanese side was concerned about and made explanations. After that, Osamu Tanaka made a brief introduction to the macroeconomic situation of Japan and related problems.

  • EPP Group Delegation Visits AMR

      On August 30, a six-person delegation headed by Pons, Vice Chairman of the European People's Party Group (EPP Group), visited the Academy of Macroeconomic Research (AMR). AMR Vice President Bi Jiyao met and held talks with the delegation. Also present at the meeting were Deputy Director Liu Xu of the Department of Research Planning and Management, Director Yao Shumei of the Institute of International Economic Research and Deputy Director Yang Changyong of the Institute of International Economic Research, Deputy Director Gao Xiang of the Institute of Energy Research, and Dr. Wang Wan of the International Exchange Division of the Department of Research Planning and Management.   At the request of the guests, Bi gave a detailed introduction to China's economic and social development since the 18th National Party Congress. He pointed out that, the Chinese government has put forward the need to promote innovative, coordinated, green, open, and shared development and advances the supply-side structural reform so as to adapt to the new normal in economic development; currently, China's economy performs within an appropriate range, and its structure constantly adjusts and upgrades; the "Belt & Road" Initiative proposed by Chinese President Xi benefits the whole world and provides the China-Europe cooperation with an important platform. After that, Bi answered the questions raised by the members of the delegation on youth employment, intellectual property and reform of state-owned enterprises.

  • One of the Key Research Projects in 2009 Got High Marks by Ministry of Education

      One of the key research projects in 2009—Study on investment in urban and rural compulsory education, which was chaired by Wang Yuanjing, associate professor of Institute of Investment, AMR, got high marks by Ministry of Education.   This project focused on investment fairness of the compulsory education, using the method of empirical research and making an in-depth analysis on Chinese compulsory education flows and stocks of inputs and input modes, analyzing the impact on investment fairness, then making a comprehensive assessment for the "non-equilibrium situation" of Chinese urban and rural compulsory education. This study is excellent political reference to promoting the equalization of urban and rural compulsory education services in China.

  • Vice President Wu Xiaohua Attends the China-ROK Economic Forum and Delivers Keyn...

      On November 12, Vice President Wu Xiaohua was invited by the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) Beijing Office to attend the China-ROK Economic Forum and deliver a keynote speech. The meeting was chaired by the Chief Representative of the Beijing Office Mr. Yang Pyeong Seob. More than 40 people attended the meeting, including officials of the South Korean Embassy inChina, representatives of South Korean economic organizations and financial institutions in Beijing and heads of main South Korean enterprises in Beijing.   President Wu delivered a speech themed “the Basic Ideas of China’s 13th Five Year Plan”, introducing the history and functions of the National Development and Reform Commission, the important role of five year plans in China’s economic and social development and the basic requirements for making five-year plans. He analyzed the underlying trend of the times during the 13th Five-Year Plan period and the basic ideas of 13th Five-Year Plan, and emphasized the main tasks of innovation and opening up.   In order to further strengthen the cooperation with KIEP, President Wu had visited the Beijing Office of KIEP together with Director Gao Guoli and Deputy Director Liu Xu of the Department of Research Planning and Management, and exchanged views with Mr. Yang Pyeong Seob on matters such as the cooperation subjects of next year, the 14th China-ROK Economic Cooperation Seminar, inviting South Korean experts to give lectures at the AMR and sending AMR visiting scholars to South Korea, etc. Both sides agreed to consolidate and develop the years of friendly relations and cooperation, and to keep promoting and deepening academic exchanges between the two institutes. President Wu pleasantly accepted Mr. Yang Pyeong Seob’s formal invitation to attend the China-ROK Economic Forum and deliver a keynote speech.

      After the rapid development in the past 30 years of reform and opening up, China's high technology industry achieves a historic transition from small to large and ranks second in the world. China has become an important production base of high technology products in the world. But compared with developed countries such as USA and Japan, China's high technology industry is big but not strong because of the lack of core competitiveness. We must strengthen the institutional innovation and independent innovation, focus on cultivating a number of leading industry with the core competitiveness, a number of large high-tech enterpriseswith independent intellectual property rights and the well-known brand and a batch of high-tech industrial cluster with prominent agglomeration effect, improve the core competitiveness and promote the shift of China from a country with big high technology industry to a country with a strong high-tech industry. Therefore we need make necessary adjustment to the existing high technology industry development model and policy.

  • The Research Team of IMF Introduced Their Achievements for Chinese Macro-economy

      On June 8th 2012, the 5th Seminar of AMR was held by Institute of Economics Research and hosted by Deputy Director Sun Xuegong, the research team of IMF introduced their achievements for Chinese Macro-economy during the seminar. The research team was led by Mr. Papa N Diaye, and composed by Senior Economists Ashvin Ahuja, Malhar Nabar, Mitali Das, Andre Meier and Murtaza Syed.   The introduction of IMF team was including three parts: firstly, the global overflow effect of investment-led economic growth in China; secondly, the potential spillover effects of China’s real estate market downward; thirdly, the Lewis turning point of the Chinese labor market.   All the participants took in-depth exchanges and discussion on specific setting of model estimates, variable selection and the applicability of results.

      On March 26, 2013, Mr. Wang Yiming, Vice President of Academy of Macroeconomic Research (AMR), NDRC, met with Mr. Gross, Director of Department of Economic Policy, German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. Mr. Liu Xu, Research Fellow of Institute of Foreign Economics Research, and Mr. Sun Wei, Assistant Research Fellow of Bureau of Research Administration, AMR, also participated in the meeting.   Director Gross is mainly in charge of the comprehensive economic policies, competition and structural policy, as well as the development forecasting of national economy. With the purpose of having exchanges on the China's economic development and policy, Director Gross visited Vice President Wang.   Vice President Wang and Director Gross carried discussion on economic development in China in recent years, the future trend and policy of economic development, China's economic rebalancing, local government debt, urbanization, China-EU mutual investment, as well as European debt crisis.

      Commissioned by the Ministry of Commerce and the National Development and Reform Commission, the Workshop Opening Ceremony of Economic Development and Long-term Planning in Developing Countries 2013 was hosted by Office of International Economic Cooperation, Bureau of Research Administration of AMR on April 26, 2013. Mr. Wu Xiaohua, Director of Bureau of Research Administration, participated in the opening ceremony.   Mr. Wu gave brief introduction about NDRC and AMR. He also delivered a lecture on the topic of the achievements for Chinese economy. Mr. Felix, from the State Development Planning Commission of Nigeria, gave a speaking as the official representative, he expressed the thanks to the Chinese side, and hoped to know China's achievements in the field of Economic Development and Long-term Planning, to strengthen the cooperation in the related field.   There are 18 officials from 11 developing countries participate in the workshop, which will last for 21 days. They will carry in-depth discussion with local governments and enterprises.

      At the invitation of ERINA (The Economic Research Institute for Northeast Asia), from February 15th to 16th 2011, Mr. Wu Xiaohua, Director of Bureau of Research Administration, and Mr. Zhang Jianping, Research Fellow of Institute of Foreign Economics Research, participated in the 2011 Northeast Asia Economic Development Conference in Niigata of Japan. Mr. Wu delivered a lecture on the theme of the basic planning ideas of the twelfth-five year plan and the development of Northeast Asia. Mr. Zhang gave a speech in English of the Necessity and Feasibility of Setting up the Northeast Asia Cooperation Development Bank.   During the conference, Mr. Wu and Mr. Zhang received by Mr. Wang Hua, General Consul in Niigata, and they carried discussion on how to strengthen cooperation between China and Niigata. The ERINA and JBIC (Japan Bank for International Cooperation) expressed that they would strengthen communication and cooperation with AMR in the future.

  • Institute of Energy Research Held the International Symposium on Energy Charter ...

      The International Symposium on Energy Charter and Global Energy Governance was held by Institute of Energy Research, NDRC, on January 26, 2015. Experts at home and abroad participated in it and carried discussion on the role of Energy Charter in global energy governance, as well as the opportunities and challenges faced by China to participate in global energy governance, promote and strengthen the global energy cooperation. Mr. Han Wenke, Director of Institute of Energy Research participated in the symposium, and Deputy Director Gao Shixian hosted it.   During the symposium, Mr. Rusnák, Secretary General of Energy Charter introduced the status and role of Energy Charter in global energy governance and international energy legal system. Section Chief of Institute of Energy Research, Mr. Zhu Yuezhong expounded the China’s current status of participating in global energy governance, promoting the international energy cooperation platform, and strengthening international energy cooperation opportunities. Subsequently, representatives from government departments, research institutions, institutions of higher learning, enterprises, and the embassies in China carried warm speeches around the theme.

  • Prof. Jim O’.Neill Visits AMR Executive Vice President Chen Dongqi and Delivers...

      On March 24, 2015, Prof. Jim O’.Neill, a renowned British economist, head of an independent review panel to investigate antimicrobial resistance, and former chief economist of Goldman Sachs, visited AMR Executive Vice President Chen Dongqi and delivered an academic report. Also present at the meeting were Song Li, deputy director of the Institute of Economic Research, Wang Jun, researcher of the Institute of Industrial and Technological Economics, and Sun Wei, assistant researcher of the Department of Research Planning and Management, the two organizations and one department being under AMR. Nearly 40 persons heard the report.   Prof. O’.Neill, known for coining BRIC, has always been paying attention to the macroeconomics topics and the growth of emerging economies. In his meeting with Mr. Chen Dongqi, he introduced the progress the antimicrobial resistance research had made and its relations with macro economy; he also expressed his hope that antimicrobial resistance could be listed as one of the topics for the G20 Summit to be hosted by China in 2016; and he exchanged views with Mr. Chen about a string of issues such as the prospects of global economy, the Sino-US economic relations, the current performance and growth momentum of the Chinese economy, and the expectations for China’s urbanization drive in the next two decades.   After the meeting, the professor presented an academic report titled “An Ever-changing World” to the research personnel of AMR. In his report, he made a predication about the world’s top 15 economies before 2050 based on his analysis on how the average GDP growth rates of major countries across the globe changed in the past four decades. In addition, he also employed the variables for sustainable growth (VSG) to score the BRIC countries, the MINT countries, and other emerging economies, based on which he conducted predictive analysis for these countries’ wealth by 2050. Besides, the attendees also held discussions with Prof. O’.Neill about the development prospects of emerging economies, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), and other issues.
